Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

We treat all types of urgent dental problems. If you're experiencing any of these issues, call us immediately:

Severe Toothache

Intense, persistent tooth pain that won't go away with over-the-counter medication. May indicate infection or abscess requiring immediate treatment.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Complete tooth loss from trauma or injury. Time is critical. If treated within 30-60 minutes, we may be able to save your natural tooth.

Broken Or Chipped Tooth

Fractured or cracked teeth from injury, biting hard foods or old fillings failing can cause pain and leave sharp edges that damage soft tissue.

Lost Filling Or Crown

Dental restoration that has come loose or fallen out completely. Leaves tooth vulnerable to further damage and can cause sensitivity or pain.

Dental Abscess

Serious infection at the tooth root or in the gums. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, fever and a bad taste in mouth. Requires urgent treatment.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Cuts, tears or punctures to the lips, tongue, cheeks or gums. May result from falls, accidents  or biting injuries.

What To Do In A Dental Emergency

Taking the right steps immediately can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Here's what to do for common emergencies before you reach our office:

Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)

  • Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (chewing surface) only. Never touch the root
  • Gently rinse the tooth with water if it's dirty, but don't scrub or remove any tissue fragments
  • Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket if possible. Bite down gently on clean gauze to hold it in place
  • If you can't reinsert it, keep it moist in milk, saliva or an emergency tooth preservation kit
  • Call us immediately because time is critical. Treatment within 30-60 minutes gives the best chance of saving your tooth

Severe Toothache

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clean the area
  • Gently floss around the tooth to remove any trapped food particles
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as directed
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling
  • Never apply aspirin or other medication directly to the gum because it can burn the tissue
  • Call us right away for an emergency appointment

Broken Or Chipped Tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area
  • Save any tooth fragments if you can find them
  • If there's bleeding, apply gauze to the area for about 10 minutes or until bleeding stops
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain
  • If the tooth has a sharp edge, cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheek
  • Call us for a same-day appointment

Lost Filling Or Crown

  • Keep the crown if you can find it, as we may be able to re-cement it
  • Clean the crown and try to slip it back over the tooth using denture adhesive or toothpaste to hold it temporarily
  • If you can't reinsert it, keep it safe and bring it to your appointment
  • Avoid chewing on the affected side
  • If the tooth is sensitive, apply clove oil with a cotton swab for temporary relief
  • Call us promptly to schedule an appointment. Don't wait weeks or the tooth may suffer further damage

Dental Abscess

  • Rinse your mouth with mild salt water several times a day to help draw out pus and reduce pain
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed
  • Do NOT try to drain the abscess yourself
  • Call us immediately. Abscesses are serious infections that can spread to other parts of the body

Soft Tissue Injuries (Tongue, Cheeks, Gums, Lips)

  • Rinse your mouth with mild salt water solution
  • Apply pressure with clean gauze or a tea bag for 15-20 minutes to stop bleeding
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the mouth to reduce swelling
  • If bleeding doesn't stop after 15-20 minutes, go to an emergency room
  • Call us to determine if you need to be seen immediately

When To Go To The ER Vs. Calling Us

Go to the emergency room if you experience:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding that won't stop after 15-20 minutes of pressure
  • Jaw fracture or suspected broken jaw
  • Severe facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing
  • Severe trauma to the head or face
  • Signs of infection spreading (high fever, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing)

Call us immediately for:

  • Knocked-out permanent tooth
  • Broken or cracked tooth
  • Severe toothache
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Dental abscess
  • Soft tissue injuries that have stopped bleeding

When in doubt, call us first at (928) 782-3685. We can help you determine the best course of action and whether you need to visit the ER before coming to our office.

Cost & Payment For Emergency Dental Care

We understand that dental emergencies are unexpected and often create financial stress. Don't avoid treatment because you're worried about cost—untreated dental emergencies only get worse and more expensive.

We work with you to make emergency care affordable:

  • Dental Insurance Accepted: We accept most dental insurance plans and will file claims on your behalf. Emergency care is often covered, sometimes with separate benefits from routine care.
  • Payment Plans Available: We offer flexible payment options to help you get the care you need without delay.
  • Transparent Pricing: Before we begin treatment, we'll explain your options and associated costs so you can make informed decisions.
  • No Insurance? No Problem: We provide quality emergency care regardless of insurance status. We'll discuss all payment options with you.

Your health and comfort are our priority. If you're experiencing a dental emergency, call us at (928) 782-3685—we'll figure out the financial details together.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While not all dental emergencies can be prevented, you can reduce your risk with these simple steps:

  • Visit us regularly for checkups: Many emergencies like abscesses start as small problems that could be caught early during routine exams.
  • Wear a mouthguard during sports: Protect your teeth during contact sports, skateboarding, or any activity with risk of facial injury.
  • Avoid chewing hard objects: Don't bite ice, hard candy, popcorn kernels, or use your teeth to open packages.
  • Address dental problems promptly: Don't ignore a cracked tooth, loose filling, or minor toothache. Small problems become big emergencies when left untreated.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene: Brush twice daily, floss once daily, and use mouthwash to prevent infections and decay that can lead to emergencies.
