What to Expect at Your First Visit

Because Your Trust Matters

Your first visit to Arizona Avenue Dentistry is designed to be comfortable, thorough and completely judgment-free. We understand that many patients feel anxious about visiting the dentist, especially if it's been a while. That's okay! We're here to help you feel at ease every step of the way.

This guide walks you through exactly what will happen during your appointment, so you know what to expect before you arrive: caring, compassionate dental care focused on your comfort and health.

Before Your Appointment

Taking a few simple steps before your visit will help your appointment go smoothly:

  • Arrive a Few Minutes Early - Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before your appointment time. This gives you time to complete any paperwork at the office and relax before your visit.
  • Gather Your Insurance Information - If you have dental insurance, bring your insurance card. Don't worry if you're not sure what's covered. because our team will verify your benefits and explain everything to you.
  • List Your Medications - Please bring a list of any medications you're currently taking, including over-the-counter supplements. This helps us provide safe, personalized care.
  • Note Any Medical Conditions - If you have any medical conditions (heart conditions, diabetes, blood thinners, etc.), let us know. Dr. Grady works closely with primary care physicians when needed to coordinate safe treatment.
  • Write Down Your Questions - Don't be shy! Bring a list of any questions or concerns about your teeth, gums or smile. We're here to answer them all.

If you haven't been to the dentist in years, please don't let that stop you from scheduling. We see patients every week who are returning after a long time away, and we'll never make you feel judged or uncomfortable about it.

When You Arrive

Your comfort begins the moment you walk through our doors:

  • Warm Welcome - Our friendly front desk team will greet you by name. We speak both English and Spanish, so communicate in whichever language you're most comfortable with.
  • Paperwork Review - We'll provide patient forms at check-in. Our team is happy to help if you have any questions while completing them.
  • Insurance Verification - We'll verify your insurance benefits and explain what's covered. If you don't have insurance, we'll discuss our flexible payment options.
  • Meet Your Dental Team - You'll be introduced to the dental hygienist and assistant who will be working with Dr. Grady during your visit.

We do our best to stay on schedule, but some appointments take longer than expected. We'll never rush through your care to stay on time, because your comfort and thoroughness matter more.

First Visit Timeline

Your initial comprehensive exam typically takes 60-90 minutes. Here's how that time breaks down:

  • Check-in & paperwork: 10-15 minutes
  • Medical history review: 5-10 minutes
  • Comprehensive exam: 20-30 minutes
  • X-rays (if needed): 10-15 minutes
  • Discussion & treatment planning: 15-20 minutes
  • Dental cleaning (if scheduled): 30-45 minutes

We'll give you breaks if you need them, and you can ask to pause at any time.

During Your Comprehensive Exam

Dr. Grady will conduct a thorough examination to understand your current oral health and develop a personalized care plan. Here's what happens during the exam:

Medical History Review

We'll discuss your overall health, medications, previous dental experiences and any concerns you have. This conversation helps us understand your unique needs and any special considerations for your care.

Digital X-Rays

If needed, we'll take digital x-rays to see what's happening beneath the surface. Our digital x-rays use 90% less radiation than traditional film and provide instant, high-quality images.

Thorough Examination

Dr. Grady will carefully examine each tooth, your gums, bite, jaw joints (TMJ) and soft tissues. We use an intraoral camera so you can see exactly what we see on a monitor.

Oral Cancer Screening

Every comprehensive exam includes a visual and tactile screening for oral cancer. Early detection saves lives, and this quick screening is a standard part of your visit.

Gum Health Assessment

We'll check the health of your gums by gently measuring pocket depths around each tooth. This helps us detect gum disease in its early stages when it's easiest to treat.

Diagnostic Photos

We may take photos of your teeth and smile to document your current condition and help plan any cosmetic or restorative work you're interested in.

Tell Us If You're Uncomfortable

During the exam, please speak up if:

  • You need a break or to adjust your position
  • Something is uncomfortable or painful
  • You have questions about what we're doing
  • You're feeling anxious and need a moment

We'll pause immediately. Your comfort is more important than finishing quickly. Many of our patients use a hand signal to let us know when they need a break, and we're happy to set that up with you before we begin.

Discussion And Treatment Planning

After the examination, Dr. Grady will sit down with you to discuss her findings in clear, easy-to-understand language. This is your opportunity to ask questions and be fully involved in decisions about your care.

We'll discuss:

  • Current Oral Health Status - What's healthy, what needs attention and why.
  • Treatment Recommendations - If any dental work is needed, we'll explain all your options, not just one "take it or leave it" approach.
  • Prioritization - If multiple treatments are recommended, we'll help you understand what's urgent and what can wait, so you can make decisions that fit your budget and schedule.
  • Cost Estimates - We'll provide written estimates for any recommended treatment, including what insurance typically covers and your expected out-of-pocket cost.
  • Timeline - How long treatments take, how many visits are needed and how we can work around your schedule.

You're never obligated to move forward with treatment on the spot. Take the written treatment plan home, think it over and call us when you're ready. We're here to support you, not pressure you.

Dental Cleaning (If Scheduled)

If your oral health is good and you don't have active gum disease, we may perform a professional cleaning during your first visit. Here's what that includes:

  • Plaque and Tartar Removal - We use gentle ultrasonic cleaning technology to remove buildup that brushing and flossing can't reach.
  • Polishing - Your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains and leave your smile smooth and bright.
  • Fluoride Treatment - We may apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen your enamel and help prevent cavities.
  • Personalized Home Care Tips - Our hygienist will provide guidance on brushing, flossing and any specific concerns for your teeth.

If you have signs of gum disease or heavy buildup, we may recommend a deeper cleaning (scaling and root planing) scheduled for a separate appointment. This allows us to thoroughly treat your gums and get them healthy.

After Your Appointment

Before you leave, we'll:

  • Schedule Your Next Visit - Most patients return every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup, but we'll recommend a schedule based on your individual needs.
  • Provide Written Treatment Plans - If treatment is recommended, you'll receive a detailed written plan with cost estimates.
  • Answer Final Questions - Our team is available to clarify anything about your visit, treatment plan or home care instructions.
  • Process Insurance Claims - We'll submit claims directly to your insurance company and follow up to verify payment.

You can call our office anytime after your visit if you think of questions later. We're always happy to help!
