A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers your entire tooth above the gum line. Think of it like a helmet that protects and strengthens a damaged tooth.
Crowns restore the shape, size, strength and appearance of teeth that are too damaged for a simple filling. They're custom-made to match your natural teeth in color and shape, so they blend in seamlessly.
With CEREC technology, we design and create your crown right here in our Yuma office using advanced digital scanning and milling equipment. No dental lab required.
We recommend dental crowns when a tooth needs more support than a filling can provide. Common situations include:
When a cavity is too large for a filling, a crown protects what's left of the natural tooth structure.
Crowns hold cracked teeth together and restore broken teeth to their original shape and strength.
Teeth that have had root canals become brittle and need a crown to protect them from breaking.
Severe wear from grinding or naturally weak teeth can be strengthened and protected with crowns.
Crowns can improve the shape, color or alignment of a tooth for a better-looking smile.
Crowns anchor dental bridges by covering the teeth on either side of a gap.
Most dental offices still use the old two-visit process. Here's how CEREC compares:
| Feature | Traditional Crowns | CEREC Same-Day Crowns |
|---|---|---|
| Number of Visits | 2 appointments (2-3 weeks apart) | 1 appointment (2-3 hours) |
| Temporary Crown | Yes - wear for 2-3 weeks | No temporary needed |
| Impressions | Goopy impression material | Digital scan (no mess) |
| Time to Completion | 2-3 weeks | Same day |
| Crown Made By | Outside dental lab | In-office milling machine |
| Material | Ceramic or porcelain | High-strength ceramic |
| Fit & Adjustments | Limited control, may need remakes | Perfect fit, immediate adjustments |
| Time Off Work | 2 separate appointments | 1 appointment |
We can complete your entire crown procedure in one visit, usually in 2-3 hours. Here's what happens:
Dr. Grady examines your tooth, removes any decay or damaged areas and shapes the tooth to receive the crown. We use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable.
Instead of using goopy impression material, we use a small digital camera to take a 3D scan of your tooth. It's fast, accurate and much more comfortable.
Using advanced software, we design your crown to match the exact shape and size needed. You can even see the design on the screen before we make it.
Our in-office milling machine carves your crown from a solid block of high-strength ceramic in about 10-15 minutes. The color is matched to your natural teeth.
We try the crown on your tooth, make any needed adjustments to the fit and bite, and then permanently bond it in place. You leave with a finished, permanent crown.
With proper care, CEREC crowns typically last 10-15 years or longer. The ceramic material is extremely durable and resistant to wear.
To get the most life from your crown:
We'll check your crown at every routine visit to make sure it's holding up well. If you ever have concerns about your crown, call us at (928) 782-3685.
The cost of a CEREC crown is typically similar to traditional crowns, but you save time and hassle with just one appointment.
Most dental insurance plans cover crowns when they're medically necessary (like repairing a broken tooth or after a root canal). Coverage is usually 50% after your deductible is met.
We accept most major dental insurance plans and will file claims on your behalf. We also offer flexible payment plans to make treatment affordable.
